Everyone knows someone who is always bragging about how, given the chance, they would make a fantastic Viking. "I would be truly excellent at passing through the eye of the wind," they say, or, "It's obvious why the Vikings fled Greenland–too many giant monster worms." Now there's a chance to do them (and everyone) a solid for the holidays: sign them up as a volunteer deckhand on the world's largest modern Viking ship.

The good sailors of the Draken Harald Hårfarge are asking for shipmates to join them on a voyage from Norway to America starting next May. "The aim is to explore and relive one of the most mythological sea voyages—the first transatlantic crossing, and the Viking discovery of the New World more than a thousand years ago," explains the Draken website. The ship will also stop in Iceland, Greenland, and Canada.

To facilitate this voyage, the main crew has done their darndest to recreate a Viking ship—a difficult task, as Vikings didn't leave many instructions. Builders relied on archaeological finds and the Norse sagas to design the Draken Harald Hårfarge, which contains 25 pairs of oars, a sail the size of a conference tent, that unmistakably Viking-style curved keel, and a small onboard tent for sleeping. Volunteers will help with rowing, sailing, and other sundry tasks, or will tag along on the equally vital support ship.

If this sounds like a good fit for you or your strong friend, apply here. But be quick—according to Draken's Facebook page, they have received over 3000 applications, and are considering closing the window early. Lots of people want to live the Viking life, even if only a few have what it takes.

Every day, we track down a fleeting wonder—something amazing that's only happening right now. Have a tip for us? Tell us about it! Send your temporary miracles to cara@atlasobscura.com.
