Created by Geographer-at-Large Eames Demetrios, Kcymaerxthaere is a "parallel universe that intersects with much of our linear Earth, but with different stories, creatures, peoples, even laws of physics and qualities of existence." It has been likened to a novel with every page in a different place.
What makes the Kcymaerxthaere project particularly interesting is that Demetrios installs informative markers and historical sites at the locations in our world that connect to his world, creating real world intersections with his imagined universe. For the months of August and September, 2014, Demetrios is acting as our Geographer-in-Residence and his Kcymaerxthaere locations will be featured all over the Atlas. Getting to this Kcymaerxthaere marker takes a bit of commitment.
First there is one or two hours ride in a Zodiac from Oban, and as they say about linear Scotland, "If you don't like the weather, don't worry, it will be different in an hour." Then you have to dive in about 60 feet of water in a protected inlet next to the Garvellach Islands. The water is cold, so you may want to take our word for this one. But if you are an experienced diver with a buddy, we would love to see your pictures. But be careful.
One of the exciting things about Kcymaerxthaere, is that the underwater realms have equally amazing stories as the terrestrial ones. This site is especially interesting because it is a location that started above water--as the vast island of Rockall, bigger than Britain and ruled by a decadent Royal Family).
The Unsoiling of Rockall was an incredible act of non-violent civil disobedience (at least to organisms--mostly, until they had no place to go), but it had profound unintended consequences. Because there was so much soil displaced (the Royal Family was left ruling nothing more than the rocky nub like the one known today), Mlates and her cohorts ended up filling in the spaces between many archipelagoes, most notably the one that was the site of linear Edinburgh. This, of course, is exactly what Kmpass, the Urgend God of Directionality is hoping for in his bid to make the world too simple. But, in the end, Mlates would at least have an opportunity to redeem herself in a far different place.
